Sri Lanka celebrated the 65 years of independence day in Trincomalee in the Eastern Province.under the theme Prosperous motherland and an affluent tomorrow. Over 4000 invitees including members of the diplomatic corps and foreign embassies attended the event.



All citizens of the country have the right to live in peace and harmony, the President Mahinda Rajapaksa said addressing the nation. He added that Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims are living together in peace in the South and East. “Trincomalee is a good example for this.” Mahinda Rajapaksa stated that separating the country according to race or religion is not practical.

He further emphasized that not only the government but the opposition too has to protect the country’s independence.

Mass Media and Information Ministry sources said over 3,000 personnel representing the three Armed Forces, Police, Civil Security Department, National Cadet Corps and National Youth Corps has participated in the National Day parade followed by a cultural pageant comprising 860 artistes belonging to 16 cultural groups.

This is the third time that the holiday is celebrated in Trincomalee, the first was 1953 and the second was in 1965.
