Upul Jayasuriya, R.R.S. Thangaraja and Thirantha Walaliyadde PC to contest for the Presidency of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka(BASL) on February 20. Upul Jayasuriya and Tirantha Walaliyadda PC handed over their nominations at the BASL head office at Hulftsdorp yesterday. 

Current President of Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) President's Counsel Wijedasa Rajapakse who is also an opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian has decided not to seek reelection for the post of President of the BASL.

Wijedasa Rajapakse was elected as the BASL President in February 2012,Rajapaksha received 1,297 votes and his term ends in March.Under the leadership of Rajapakshe, who headed the BASL, a policy making body of more than 11,000 lawyers in the country passed several resolutions against the impeachment of the Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake. 


Secretary of BASL Sanjaya Gamage has said that the nominations for the election of officers should be handed over before the 10th of January.

The ballots for election of officers will be cast on the 20th of February. Around 11,000 members of the Bar Association are eligible to vote.
